There is a rickety looking spiral staircase that you have to survive climbing in order to witness the marvelous painted frescoes which can be found beneath an overhang, which are said to be 1500 years old.

Kandy

The last fortress of the Sinhala Kings is in the hill city of Kandy. This is a charming place that provides a living record of the country’s splendid history, arranged around a stunning man-made lake in the picturesque hill country. Furthermore, this is also the site where Sri Lanka’s greatest annual festival is held – the Esala Perahera Festival in August. During this festival, numerous people from all parts of the country, as well as elephants are paraded in the temple courtyards.

The Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the most well-known attractions in Sri Lanka. The orphanage has already become the home of wild, abandoned elephants, including babies. It can be located near Kegalle, in the hill country. There are around 60 elephants that are fed, bathed and taken care of in this haven. Never miss the chance to witness the baby elephants as they enjoy their daily river soak.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is the place which features the brilliance of medieval Sri Lanka. This is an ancient and small city showcasing the stone sculptures which is said to be created in the 12th century. You can also find there the Gal Vihara, which is made up of three gigantic Buddha figures. The statues are being well regarded as they said to be among the most sacred monuments in the entire country.
